Instructor Introduction — Sunny Yu

Sunny Yu is the founder and lead instructor of the Southern California Youth Cultural Association (SCYCA), specializing in traditional Chinese performing arts including dragon dance, lion dance, and diabolo. Since 2018, she has been committed to creating meaningful opportunities for youth to learn these cultural art forms through structured, safe, and culturally grounded training.

Sunny’s teaching emphasizes strong fundamentals, teamwork, discipline, and cultural understanding. She is known for her patient, detail‑oriented approach and her ability to inspire students to grow both as performers and as individuals. Under her guidance, SCYCA students regularly perform at community festivals, school celebrations, and city cultural events across Irvine and Southern California.

Sunny believes that dragon and lion dance training builds confidence, leadership, and cultural identity. Her mission is to empower young people to connect with their heritage and become positive cultural ambassadors in their communities.

Sunny Yu 老師長期義工推廣中華傳統文化,是南加州青少年文化協會(SCYCA)的創辦人與主要指導老師,專精於舞龍、舞獅與扯鈴等表演藝術。自 2018 年起,她觀察到南加州缺乏系統化的青少年舞龍舞獅訓練,因此投入心力建立完整的教學架構,讓更多孩子能在安全、專業且充滿文化底蘊的環境中學習。

Sunny 老師的教學風格嚴謹而富有耐心,重視基本功、團隊合作與節奏默契,同時強調紀律、禮儀與文化意義。她相信舞龍舞獅不只是技藝,更是一種能培養自信、領導力與文化認同的教育方式。在她的帶領下,學生們不僅在技巧上快速成長,也在各大社區活動、學校慶典與城市文化節中展現亮眼表現,成為傳承文化的重要力量。

Instructor Introduction — Hans Chen

Hans Chen is a senior instructor with SCYCA’s Dragon and Lion Dance Team and is currently studying Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). With eight years of experience, he is recognized as one of SCYCA’s strongest lion dance performers, having completed more than 250 major performances across Southern California.Hans is known for his precise footwork, steady rhythm, and powerful stage presence. As an instructor, he brings patience, clarity, and high expectations, helping students build strong fundamentals and confidence. His professionalism and leadership inspire young performers to grow in both skill and cultural pride.

 

Hans Chen 是 SCYCA 資深舞龍舞獅指導老師,目前就讀於加州大學爾灣分校(UCI)數學系。他加入 SCYCA 已長達八年,是團隊中舞獅能力最出色的成員。至今累積超過 250 場大型活動演出,經驗豐富、技術扎實,深受學生與家長信任。 Hans 以精準的步伐、穩定的節奏與強烈的舞台張力聞名。作為老師,他耐心、清楚且要求細節,協助學生建立扎實基本功與自信。他的專業與榜樣精神,讓更多青少年在舞龍舞獅中找到熱情與文化認同。

Instructor Introduction — Margaret Shih

Margaret Shih, PhD. in Beijing University of TCM. She serves as the martial arts instructor for SCYCA and is also an active member of the Parent Dragon Dance Team. With a strong background in martial arts, she helps students develop body control, strength, and coordination, enhancing the power and precision of their dragon and lion dance movements. Margaret is known for her patient, disciplined, and clear teaching style, guiding students to improve their skills and stage presence. As part of the Parent Dragon Team, she leads by example, demonstrating dedication to cultural heritage and inspiring young performers to grow with confidence and passion.

Margaret Shih, 北京中醫博士,在南加推廣中華傳統文化多年。是 SCYCA 團隊的武術指導,同時也是家長舞龍隊的重要成員。她以多年武術背景為基礎,協助學生建立紮實的身體控制、力量運用與動作協調,讓舞龍與舞獅的動作更具力度與精準度。Margaret 以耐心、嚴謹與清晰的教學方式著稱,能有效引導學生提升技巧與舞台表現。作為家長舞龍隊的一員,她更以身作則,展現對文化傳承的熱情與投入,激勵孩子們勇於挑戰、持續成長。

Instructor Introduction — Kathryn Lau

Kathryn Lau is an assistant coach for SCYCA’s Dragon Dance Team and is currently studying Music at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). She has been part of SCYCA for seven years, gaining extensive experience in performance, rhythm, formations, and teamwork. Known for her patience and attention to detail, Kathryn excels at guiding younger students in building strong fundamentals and confidence. As someone who grew from a young performer into a coach, she inspires students to take pride in their skills and carry forward the spirit of cultural tradition.

Kathryn Lau 是 SCYCA 舞龍隊的青年助理教練,現就讀於加州大學爾灣分校(UCI)音樂系。她自小加入 SCYCA,至今已有七年表演與訓練經驗,熟悉舞龍的節奏、隊形與協作技巧。Kathryn 以耐心、細心與穩定的帶隊能力著稱,擅長引導年幼隊員建立基本功與團隊默契。作為從學生一路成長為教練的典範,她以自身經驗激勵孩子們在舞台上展現自信、力量與文化傳承。

Instructor Introduction — Abbie Lau

Abbie Lau is a senior assistant coach with SCYCA and has been part of the team for eight years. Specializing in lion dance drumming, she has performed in more than 200 major events and is known for her exceptional natural talent in rhythm and musical coordination. Abbie is also highly skilled at teaching beginner-level students. With patience, clarity, and steady guidance, she helps young learners build timing, confidence, and teamwork. Her expertise makes her both the rhythmic backbone of the team and a key mentor for new students entering the world of lion dance.

Abbie Lau 是 SCYCA 的資深助理教練,加入團隊已有八年,專精於舞獅鼓的節奏與帶隊,累積超過 200 場大型活動演出。她對舞獅鼓的節奏掌握具有超乎常人的天份,能精準帶動整支隊伍的氣勢與節奏變化。 同時,Abbie 也非常擅長教導初級班學生,以耐心、清楚的方式建立孩子的節奏感、自信與團隊默契。她的穩定與細心讓初學者能快速進入狀況,成為團隊不可或缺的節奏核心與基礎訓練支柱。

About SCYCA — Founding Story 

Southern California Youth Cultural Association (SCYCA) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cultural arts education, youth development, and community engagement. Based in Irvine, California, SCYCA provides structured training and performance opportunities in traditional Chinese cultural arts, including dragon dance, lion dance, and diabolo (Chinese yo‑yo). We offer free classes, giving students the opportunity to learn cultural performing arts in a supportive and accessible environment.

SCYCA’s cultural arts programs are led by Instructor Sunny Yu, who has extensive experience teaching traditional Chinese performing arts and working with youth. Under her guidance, students develop not only artistic skills but also discipline, teamwork, leadership, and cultural identity.

The organization was founded to create a youth‑centered environment where children can grow through meaningful cultural experiences. SCYCA collaborates with families, schools, and community partners to preserve cultural heritage while empowering the next generation of young leaders.

Through performances, workshops, and community programs, SCYCA continues to strengthen cultural understanding, enrich local communities, and inspire youth to take pride in their heritage and personal growth.
